Governor Hobbs has halted the signing of bills after stepping away from budget negotiations more than three weeks ago, according to an April 13 statement. The move comes amid ongoing disagreements over state budget numbers and priorities.
The freeze on bill signings has raised concerns about the progress of legislative work in Arizona. The decision is seen by some as a response to stalled negotiations between the governor’s office and legislative leaders.
“Governor Hobbs quit the budget talks more than three weeks ago after it became clear her numbers did not add up, and now she is trying to distract from that failure with a bill-signing freeze. That is political theater. Arizona needs a balanced budget built on honest numbers, not press stunts and invented revenue. House Republicans are at the Capitol, doing the work and ready to govern. The Governor can end her sideshow anytime by coming back to the table, doing her job and dealing with reality,” said Arizona State Representative Michael Carbone.
Carbone was elected as a Republican member of the Arizona State House in 2023 for District 25, succeeding Michelle Udall according to Ballotpedia.
The current impasse highlights tensions between state leadership as lawmakers seek agreement on fiscal matters affecting public services and government operations.
