CITY OF AVONDALE: Avondale Honors Martin Luther King Jr. Day

City of Avondale issued the following announcement on Jan. 8

Avondale Mayor Kenn Weise will proclaim Monday, January 20, 2020 as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Avondale. City offices, facilities and the libraries will be closed that day in observance of the holiday.

To honor the late Dr. King’s civil rights legacy, both the Avondale Civic Center Library and the Sam Garcia Western Avenue Library will have special book displays dedicated to the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and will also designate children story times in honor of the holiday during the week of January 13. A story time on “Kindness” will be hosted January 14, 11 a.m. at the Civic Center Library (11350 W Civic Center Dr, Avondale), and ‘I Am Special’ theme story time will be offered January 16, 11:15 a.m. at the Sam Garcia Library (495 E Western Ave, Avondale). City operations affected by the Holiday:

The Public Works Department will follow the holiday trash and recycling pick up schedule. There will be no trash and recycling collections on Monday, January 20. Trash service will take place one day later. If your trash or recycling pickup normally takes place on Friday, please note that your container will be picked up on Saturday. Containers must be placed at curbside no later than 5 a.m. on the day of collection.

Transit services for the ZOOM Circulator will run on regular schedule, with no express service.

The Avondale City Council Meeting, regularly scheduled on Monday, will be affected by the holiday schedule. The meeting will instead be Tuesday, January 21.
