We’ve all heard of The Great Resignation and quiet quitting in the wake of the pandemic. While the job market continues to undergo various shifts and challenges, the city of Goodyear has made it a priority to invest in its workforce to retain top talent, provide the best services and make sure that its employees feel valued.
The city was recently recognized as the highest-rated government workplace in the nation by the National Research Center (NRC) at Polco. This comes after city employees were surveyed earlier this year, and the results showed stellar progress across the board in all categories in its National Employee Survey (NES).
“We believe that our employees are our greatest asset and that engaged employees are the key to providing exceptional customer service to our community,” said City Manager Julie Karins. “As the city continues to grow, the Goodyear City Council and city leadership strive to ensure the city is a great place to work for our employees.”
In 2022, city of Goodyear employees rated the city at 95% or higher in these areas:
- Overall job satisfaction
- Feeling positive about working for the city
- Employee values match or fit with the values of the city
- Employees plan on working for this city a year from now
- Recommend working for the city to someone who asks
- Maintaining a work environment that is free of drug or alcohol abuse
When the city began surveying its employees in 2014, many of its results were below average. Employees at the time said there were few mentoring opportunities, communication was lacking and meetings were ineffective.
“We listened to what our employees were telling us through the survey and focused on areas where we could make effective changes,” said Human Resources Director Lyman Locket.
It worked.
The city isn’t resting on its laurels, though, and continues to focus on its employees with its six core values: adaptability, empathy, initiative, innovation, integrity and optimism as the foundation of its culture. The city’s goal is to be the best place anyone will ever work. Next on its agenda: creating the ultimate employee experience.
