Cochise County issued the following announcement on Aug. 19.
The Cochise County Solid Waste Transfer Station in Willcox was damaged due to a fire that occurred on Wednesday, August 18. Residents in the Willcox area should expect service delays at the station for the next two weeks, though it is open normal business hours.
According to Cochise County Public Works Director, Marty Haverty, the damage to the facility is extensive and will take several weeks to repair. “We have equipment and electrical damage that impacted the operation. The Willcox Transfer Station is a vital part of our solid waste system. We will get it up and running as soon as possible for the public. We appreciate the quick response efforts of the Willcox fire and police departments during the emergency,” said Haverty.
The fire originated from smoldering ashes mixed in with other trash. The public is reminded to always ensure barbeque coals, burn barrels, and ashes are completely extinguished and cold to the touch before placing in trash.
