City of Avondale commemorates the 20th Anniversary of 9/11; New monument unveiled to honor local first responders

911

City of Avondale issued the following announcement on Sept. 9.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the attacks that took the lives of nearly 3,000 people on Sept. 11. In recognition, the City of Avondale has dedicated two new plaques honoring first responders at the Walk of Honor pathway located at the Civic Center Complex.

“This year, Sept. 11 will serve as an especially painful reminder that 20 years ago, thousands of innocent Americans lost their lives in a terrorist attack that shook the entire nation,” said Avondale Mayor Kenn Weise. “Among those who perished or were seriously injured were the public safety first responders who rushed in to save the lives of so many. These newly installed monuments at our Civic Center Complex serve as a reminder of the important role that Avondale first responders play in our community, acknowledging that any time they may be called upon to risk their lives to help others.”

The newly installed public safety memorial can be visited at any time at the Civic Center Complex Walk of Honor path, of which is located next to the Avondale City Court facility.

The Walk of Honor is a dedicated pathway of memorial bricks, benches, and flags, commemorating those who have provided service through military service – and now,  public service through public safety.

The City of Avondale this week held an unveiling of the new monument display, with a moment of silence to remember the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedy as well as acknowledge those who have been lost in the line of public service, and the commitment of local public safety members to protect, serve and keep the community safe.

On the date of September 11, 2021, a video of the event can be viewed on Facebook (@CityofAvondaleAZ; @AvondalePoliceDepartment; @AvondaleFire-Medical)  and YouTube (CityofAvondale,AZ), to commemorate the date, and to share the unveiling of the new public safety memorial.

Additionally, Mayor Weise has issued a proclamation commemorating the 20th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 and calling upon all Avondale residents to reflect on the role and the heroic actions taken by first responders, and to thank them for their continued service and sacrifices.
