City of Goodyear issued the following announcement on Jan. 13.
In a unanimous vote on Dec. 17, 2021, the Goodyear City Council appointed Goodyear City Councilmember Joe Pizzillo to serve as Goodyear’s mayor, following the passing of Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord.
Mayor Pizzillo has 30 years of experience in state and local government budgeting. Prior to his retirement from the city of Goodyear in 2008, he served as the city’s budget manager. He is an adjunct professor of accounting and finance with Estrella Mountain Community College, Grand Canyon University and Park University.
“Goodyear truly is the jewel of the southwest. It has become the premier place to live, work and play,” Mayor Pizzillo said. “There’s no better place to raise a family. There’s no better place to plant roots. There are a lot of reasons why we are the nation’s ninth fastest growing city."
Mayor Pizzillo’s top priorities include bringing more quality jobs to Goodyear.
“Last year, we helped welcome more than 2,600 new jobs in our city. That means letting companies know how many skilled workers we have in Goodyear, and that we need high-paying jobs,” he said.
In the 2021 Retail Survey, Goodyear residents provided feedback on the restaurants, entertainment venues and retail shops they want to see in the city. Mayor Pizzillo will continue to make it a point of emphasis to attract these highly-desired businesses .
“Last year, we welcomed dozens of new retailers to Goodyear, but we need more. We will continue to make it a priority to make sure new businesses feel welcomed and valued,” he said.
Mayor Pizzillo recognizes the importance of continuing to ensure the safety of Goodyear residents, and keeping law enforcement and emergency personnel up to date with the latest training and equipment.
Ensuring an adequate, safe flow of traffic is also paramount.
“Our roadways are getting crowded. I feel it, too. Improving traffic flow is important, not only because you need to get to your destination, but also to keep drivers safe,” he said. “As our population grows, it’s important that we keep up with the pace of traffic to ease congestion and make sure our roadways are as efficient as possible.”
With so much to look forward to, including the opening of Goodyear Civic Square at GSQ, Mayor Pizzillo believes the future has never been brighter for Goodyear.
“I’m so honored to be your mayor. I’m looking forward to what this year has to bring for our city – and if there’s one thing I know for sure, Goodyear keeps getting better and better,” he said.
