The Buckeye Police Department wants to expand its volunteer team. Volunteers fill various roles in the department and provide important assistance to officers and professional staff.
The volunteer team includes individuals who meet certain criteria to patrol Buckeye communities. The Citizens on Patrol (C.O.P) program involves residents who drive marked vehicles in an assigned area with the mission to observe and report suspicious behavior to police.
C.O.P. volunteers provide extra eyes and ears in our neighborhoods which are a great help to officers who cannot be everywhere at once. They patrol in two to three hour shifts and become familiar with the communities and the people who live there so they can better recognize when something doesn’t look right.
Citizens on Patrol also bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community. They are well-received by residents and business owners who get to know the volunteers and are able to communicate their safety concerns.
Volunteers who serve in the C.O.P. roles are required to complete at least six patrol hours every month, attend meetings and training. To be eligible for the C.O.P. program, candidates must be a Buckeye resident, successfully pass a background check and drug test, complete a certified driving test, and be able to communicate via police radio.
Individuals who want to be in the C.O.P. program or are interested in other volunteer opportunities are encouraged to call Don McWilliams at 623-349-6459 or email dmcwilliams@buckeyeaz.gov.
